In a couple of months the demonstrations brought to the first multi-party elections of the Balkan State (March 1991). Before that moment Albanians were living for decades under the isolationism of a ferocious socialist dictatorship. After the fall of the regime, in less than thirty years, the country has changed a lot on the path towards liberal democracy. The route is still far to be fully accomplished but there is a general will of leaving the past behind, starting from its architectonical remnants from the brutalist period as well as from the previous Italian fascist occupation. In this complex context, thousands of defensive bunkers are still lying as ubiquitous elements of the Albanian landscape and force the community to face its recent History. All these concrete structures of various dimensions were designed during the government of Enver Hoxha, the communist leader of the State from 1944 to 1985. Nobody knows their actual number: some estimates suggest that they might be up to 750,000, scattered all around the country. Their construction took place from 1967 until 1986 and it follows a fixed engineered drawing created by Josif Zagali, a military architect whose career followed the destiny of the regime itself. Zagali was a partisan during WWII and then became one of the closest advisors of the dictator. In 1974 he was accused of espionage and was finally sent to a labour camp. Only a few years before his death he repented for his loyalty to the regime. Despite this hectic rush, though, none of the bunkers have ever been used in a real conflict (or as a defensive device against an enemy invasion) during Hoxha’s rule. A trópos is a recurring element. A trópos is a motif in narrative. Yes, also in visual narrative. A trópos is a cliché. Everything can become a trópos, but each of them is not present as itself. It is there to direct to something else. A trópos keeps changing: that's what makes it always the same. Tropographics is definitely not a series of beautiful pictures found by chance on the web. And it isn't either a collection of random weird scenes. This is instead our trip through landscape and photography, in search of tropes around the world. We created a special online archive to show the whole research. The website will be constantly updated and expanded with new categories. Estonia is the northernmost of the three Baltic States. 1.3 million people live in the country and, as a consequence of 50 years of Soviet occupation from 1944 to 1991, a quarter of them are ethnic Russians. Half of them (moreless 130,000 people) is concentrated in one single county, called Ida-Viru. This little area shares its eastern border with Russia. A very peculiar one, indeed, since it parts far more than two sovereign States: crossing the border (granitsa, in Russian language) means to leave behind both European Union and NATO, of which Estonia is among the most loyal and committed members. After the outbreak of the Ukrainian Civil War and the unilateral annexation of Crimea by Vladimir Putin in order “to defend Russian-speaking citizens abroad”, experts and strategists raised concerns towards Estonia, and especially Ida-Viru county, as the next possible target of the Kremlin’s brave expansionist policy. Indeed, in the whole EU there is no higher percentage of ethnic Russians compared with total population than the one of Ida-Viru: 73% (with peaks of 85% in the municipalities of Narva and Sillamäe). Here, in July 1993, a referendum was also held: the inhabitants were asked if they wanted the county to be autonomous from the newly declared Estonian Republic. The “yes” vote prevailed but the State Court ruled that the consultation contravened the Constitution and the movement for autonomy was deflated. Estonia’s recent past went through a severe process of Russification, started with Stalin in the 50s and ended just after the country achieved the independence in 1991. Since that moment the Estonian government has not yet been fully able to equalize the living conditions of the vast Russian minority to the country average. Today some of the ethnic Russians have chosen to embrace with hope a common future under the Estonian flag, but on the other side there is still a huge number of them who have maintained their Russian citizenship. All pictures and text by Filippo Bardazzi and Laura Chiaroni. New opportunities in unconventional gas exploitation let Europe dream of lightening its dramatic dependence on Russian supplies. Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the controversial method used to drill this type of gas. It is an invasive process that employs high-pressure water jets mixed with specific chemicals to break the shale rocks and to extract the gas contained in them. According to some studies, fracking would have serious consequences on the environment and it would require a strict regulation, which is still absent from the vague energy policy of the European Union. Among the European countries interested in shale gas explorations, only three have currently granted permits for drilling to energy companies: Poland, United Kingdom and Romania. For a long time the Far West has been the destination of adventurers, loners and pioneers moved either by vocation or by need. For these people the unexplored territories beyond the frontier represented a real step forward towards freedom and, possibly, glory. This unusual embrace between civilization and a wild, magnificent, but sometimes also inhospitable and violent, nature originated the American man. The Far West played a key role not only in the geographical definition of the U.S., but also in the creation of an epic (as well as a political doctrine of expansion) that became the cultural cornerstone for the growing country. It is no coincidence that the Western epic experienced its greatest glory in the twentieth century when the U.S.A. emerged as the dominant world power. We felt it was important to make this journey. A trip that allowed us to observe the condition of American Western symbols in the territory in which they were born. &nbsp;&nbsp; Today immobility and stillness distinguish the condition of the contemporary West. Although some environmental and cultural changes have impacted the region, they have been unable to free this land from its famous iconography and the history it stands for. An everyday reality, rich in variety and dissonance, lies beyond this conventional and stereotyped vision, only good for careless tourists. &nbsp;&nbsp; So far, I've spent my whole life in Tuscany and I've always seen and felt this land as a nostalgic place of mind. Most of the time this wistful mood is triggered in my eyes by 'familiar' elements of the landscape that often don't keep up with our fast-changing age. All elements of a transforming environment, though, may lose their original purpose but they can never be deprived of their consistence. They always survive as suspended traces of disused destinies. I was looking for a photography to be together intimate and direct to translate into images this view on my own world. Instant photography perfectly embodied both of these characteristics. All images have been shot on original Polaroid peel–apart films. The film used was a Type 100 Paul Giambarba Blue Edition, expired in 2009 and now discontinued. The peculiarity of this film is the final result, whose colour tone can range from deep blue to magenta, depending on light conditions and exposure. <img width="1364" height="1080" width_o="1364" Storie dal distretto Workplaces and human capital have been the two characters that allowed the growth of the Prato textile district and the development over the decades of an inestimable historical, architectural and industrial heritage. The specificity of both these aspects are linked together by an ideal scheme, made up of environments and people that share common aspects. TIPI deconstructs this relationship into its basic components and through a continuous change of perspective tries to offer new attention to a familiar and deeply felt theme for the local community. The images here shown come from 8 realities of the area, quite heterogeneous one from another: companies in regular and complete activity are flanked by spaces that used to be workplaces in the recent past and that today are part of a process of reconversion and regeneration. TIPI is a commissioned project, funded by the Municipality of Prato - Department of Tourism and promoted by the Textile Museum Foundation and by CDSE - Centro di Documentazione Storico Etnografica. There is a country in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines that does not appear on any map. A micro-nation that first emerged in 1996, when the winds of secession blew across northern Italy after the electoral success of Umberto Bossi and his political party, the right-wing Lega Nord (Northern League). Its name is Mapsulon and its self-declared territory mostly overlaps with the municipality of Maresca, a pleasant village less than 20 miles away from Pistoia, a city northwest of Florence. The beginning of this bizarre and little-known story dates back to the early 1990s, when a small group of young and literate friends, born or raised in the village of Maresca, imagined a different world based on art, amusement, and political utopias. “We were standing at a crossroads,” recalls Secondo Calibano, one of the founding fathers of Mapsulon. “Lega Nord had been promoting the independence of Padania from Italy for years, and the electoral triumph of the party in 1996 seemed to make this scenario absolutely plausible.”&nbsp;Padania, the nation that the Lega Nord wished to create, would have stretched from the Italian Alps to the northern border of Tuscany – almost exactly where the village of Maresca stood. Soon, uncertainty about the village's fate began to unsettle life within this little world. “We began to ask ourselves if the future of our community would have been with the new emerging country or with the remains of Italy,” Secondo recalls. Amid this precarious political situation, the people of Maresca decided to take their destiny into their own hands. On the 15th of September 1996 – the day when Padania celebrated its intended self-determination, Maresca declared independence – naming itself Mapsulon. Proud of their Etruscan origins, the villagers felt that they had nothing in common with Padania; nor with the bureaucracy of the Italian state. for COVISIONI: / LUZ Photo Agency The textile district of Prato is the biggest cluster of Europe devoted to the production of wool yarns and fabrics. More than 7.000 companies are currently working in the district. The first activities in this field date back to the Middle Ages, when the wool was recycled using the waters of the river Bisenzio that flows through the city from the Apennines. In the '90s the textile production of Prato went into crisis, due to rising competition of industries based in several emerging countries. Now, the uncertainty brought by the COVID-19 pandemic might be a new setback for the economy of the district and we still do not know how many companies will survive these hard times. One thing is, though, already taken for granted: this health disaster will force all activities to adopt extraordinary and expensive measures of social distancing and occupational safety. COVISIONI: is a collective project ran by 40 photographers coming from all the 20 Italian regions that has the aim of documenting the changes the country is facing after the COVID-19 pandemic.
